Chapter 13

Khalil – Earlier That Day

"Man, I’m about to surprise Aub,” I told Chris while stretching.

I landed in Chicago around two this morning. Chris let me crash at his place and I got caught up with my man’s over some fast food and smoked a little. It was going on two in the afternoon and I was fully rested. Atlanta was more than I expected, I took care of things that were long overdue and left me with questions that I had to figure out myself.

"She doesn’t know you’re back?" He made a sandwich.

"Nah," I yawned.

"Well, that's sweet of you little love birds."

"Shut up,” I sucked my teeth.

He flicked me off, and I chuckled, grabbing my shoes and leaving. I was going to check up on my apartment first.

It took me a half an hour to get home. I lived on the other side of town. I checked my mail. I got yet another letter from my dead beat father, like always. I just kept all his shitty letters in a box. I’ve written back and that was once. The others just turned into endless drafts. I didn't even know why I kept them. I threw the envelope on the coffee table and went to take a shower.

My tense body eased under the hot water, felt good to be back home. I got out after twenty minutes and wrapped a towel around my lower half. I handled the rest of my hygiene and got fresh for my baby girl. I cleaned up my house a little because I planned on bringing her back over here.

I checked if she had replied to my message. Nothing. It was almost 3pm. She better be home. I was about to tap on her contact when Shad called me.

"Wass-"

"Khalil! Get to the hospital now!" Rodney was actually the one on the phone. I furrowed my eyebrows; I knew it had something to do with Aubrielle. With her it could be anything but I beg the Lord that she’s just being dramatic.

“What happened?”

“Rashad will explain when you come.” he hung up.

My heart was heavy and I wanted to know what was going on. I snatched up my keys and got into my car. I got to the hospital receiving a text from Shad as I was walking in.

"How can I help you?" The lady asked not pulling her eyes away from her computer.

"Aubrielle Jones,” I rushed.

“How do you spell that?”

I rolled my eyes, and she looked up blushing.

"A-u-b-r-i-e--"

"Hey sexy,” she smiled seductively.

I exhaled loudly growing impatient.

"Khalil!" I turned to see Rodney who waved me over to him.

“Hey, lil’ man." I dapped him up and he dapped me back.

"What happened to Aubri?"

He shrugged his shoulders, but he looked kind of confused and upset. We finally stopped at a room. He opened the door. The first thing I laid eyes on was my baby laid out on the hospital bed, eyes shut tight, bruises along her smooth skin, bandages all over her and needles in her forearms.

I looked up at an older man.
